  • BURRARD INLET CONSOLIDATED ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT PLAN - COMMUNITY FORUM

    The Burrard Inlet Environmental Action Plan (BIEAP) was formed a decade ago to bring together federal, provincial and local governments with the Vancouver Port Authority to promote environmental stewardship.
    The BIEAP partnership is preparing a Consolidated Environmental Management Plan for Burrard Inlet. This plan will bring together, in one document, all the measures the BIEAP partners use to manage the activities that affect the Burrard Inlet ecosystem.
    To help develop the plan, BIEAP is hosting a series of community forums in November and December in Burnaby, Port Moody, Vancouver and North Vancouver, and invite you to participate in one of the forums.

    Join Mayor Barbara Sharp and Members of City Council, Al Jonsson of Fisheries and Oceans Canada, and Engineering Parks and Environment staff at the official unveiling of the Mosquito Creek Park Interpretive Sign. Light refreshments will be served. Following the event, there will be an informal guided tour of the Fell Channel salmonid enhancement project.

    1 1/2 hour presentation followed by a 20 minute question period.

    Lower Seymour Conservation Reserve in North Vancouver.
    Information and training for community groups and interested individuals on water quality issues in urban streams.
    Speakers:
    • Lisa Perry (DFO) - sources of pollution, water quality parameters.
    • Chris Larock (Environment Canada) - spill response, hands-on demonstration on usage of different materials to clean up chemical spills in a river.
    • Mel Kotyk (DFO) - federal, provincial and local government regulations to protect fish habitat.
    • Richard Boase (District of North Vancouver) - environmental bylaws, public participation in stream protection.

    Bring your lunch and rain clothing.

    Take part as small celebrations welcome the runners along the route. The runners leave Edgement Village at 2:00 pm, then follow the Mosquito Creek Trail to the 17th Street Entry where speakers will describe the Salmon Habitat Project. Follow the runners to the Squamish Nation, and on to Waterfront Park for a welcome ceremony.

    Saturday March 4, 2000 - count, identify and measure fry
    10:00 am.
    Meet in the lower parking lot by the footbridge in William Griffin Park.
    The Griffin Channel was constructed in 1998. Coho spawned in the channel in 1998 and 1999. The fry count will give us some idea of fish population in the new habitat. Call Alan Jonsson at 988-1682 or MCSS at 986-6715.
