- COMMUNITY IVY PULL
MAHON PARK
Saturday, November 23, 2002 from 1:00 to 4:00 pm
Mahon Park, Keith Road Trailhead (north side of Keith Road just east of Bewicke Avenue)
Refreshments served.
The natural areas of Mahon Park are being seriously impacted by invasive exotic vegetation. Plants such as English Ivy, Clematis, Himalayan Blackberry and Giant European Hogweed are displacing native vegetation and wildlife habitat in Mahon Park. Without removal, these plants threaten to take over the park's native ecosystem.
Join residents, community stewards and CNV Parks and Environment staff in Mahon Park's first community Ivy Pull. After a brief orientation session, ivy and clematis removal will begin in a designated area of the park.
Learn about:
- Proper removal techniques
- Importance of our remnant natural areas
- Impacts of dumping garden waste in our natural areas
This event is the first of future community stewardship events planned for Mahon Park. Come help be a "Friend of Mahon Park".

- PRESENTATION - CAPILANO COLLEGE ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE PROGRAM
WAGG CREEK WATERSHED
Thursday, May 23, 2002
7:00 pm to 9:30 pm
City of North Vancouver, City Hall, Council Chambers
141 West 14th Street, North Vancouver
The Capilano College Environmental Science Program is relatively unique, providing one year of specialized post-graduate study. With a focus on practical, job-related skills for the environmental industry, the program has attracted students from across Canada with academic backgrounds in such fields as Biology, Geography, Environmental Science, Geology and Engineering.
As part of the final course in the program, the students must design and implement an environmental study of their choice. In four weeks, the study teams prepare a detailed project proposal, collect and interpret data, and prepare a professional written report with analysis and recommendations.
Student project teams will be presenting the results of the following four study topics:
1. Vegetation in the Wagg and Mission Creek watersheds with emphasis on invasive plant species and slope stability.
2. Soil erosion in the Wagg Creek watershed.
3. Aquatic habitat in Mission Creek
4. Stormwater management recommendations for the Wagg Creek Park pond.
The presentation includes suggestions for the development of public information materials such as poster displays.
The City of North Vancouver's Engineering, Parks and Environment staff have worked with the program instructor to identify topics that would not only provide meaningful studies for the students, but would also result in useful background data and recommendations for the City's environmental initiatives such as the Mahon Park Natural Area Management and Rehabilitation Plans and the ongoing Mission/Wagg Creek Integrated Stormwater Management Plan. With both of these major City studies beginning public consultation processes over the next few months, the Capilano College student projects provide an excellent opportunity for the public to learn about important environmental issues that the City is planning to address.

UPPER MOSQUITO CREEK PARK TRAIL
Sunday, February 17, 2002 at 2:00 pm
Evergreen Place - West Side Trail
Trail users are invited to help determine a planting plan for the Upper Mosquito Creek Park Trail.
The District of North Vancouver is required to plant native vegetation along Mosquito Creek to compensate for trees lost due to flood control work above Montroyal. Fisheries and Oceans Canada would prefer conifers (Douglas Fir, Western Red Cedar, Sitka Spruce) to replace the large number of conifers lost, but will accept deciduous shrubs and a few deciduous trees along the trail. Trail users have, in the past, indicated that they wish to have an open and unshaded trail to maximize winter sunlight, views of creek, and safety.
Shrubs used would be selected for leaf colour, flowers and berries, and usefulness to birds. The planting plan would take into account views of the creek and safety related to shrubs being close to the trail.
A Community Planting Day could take place in April.
