  • DAY HIKE
    MOSQUITO CREEK OLD GROWTH FOREST

    Saturday, September 11, 2004
    8:00 am to late afternoon
    Upper Mosquito Creek Watershed
For background on this old growth forest see Nature Canada's write-up about Mosquito Creek and Mosquito Creek Old Growth Forest.

David Cook will be leading a Vancouver Natural History Society (VNHS) interpretive hike into what is probably the last forest of old growth red cedar in the Vancouver area.
Dozens of giant red cedars up to 10 feet in diameter dominate an area of about 25 hectares. The forest is located at about 700m elevation on Grouse Mountain in the Mosquito Creek watershed.
The hike will commence at 8:00 am from the top of Skyline Drive (under the Hydro Line). The first section of the hike will be a little steep and slippery (loose gravel) but the route will moderate when the hikers reach skid roads that lead up to the forest. The elevation gain will be about 300m.
It will be an all day hike with lots of interpretive stops and you will need to be in top physical shape.
Bring water, lunch, thick-soled, deep-tread hiking boots and appropriate clothing for temperature changes and possible showers.
Although this is a VNHS hike, membership is not required.
    For more information:
Contact David Cook at 604-924-0147 (phone) or cookeco2@yahoo.com (email).

  • PLANTAPALOOZA - FREE OUTDOOR CONCERT
    MAHON PARK

    Saturday, June 19, 2004
    2:00 pm to 6:00 pm
Fen Burdett Stadium in Mahon Park
Jones Avenue and West 16th Street, North Vancouver
What do Juno-nominated, genre-defying pop-folk poet Kinnie Starr, vocalist Frazey Ford (of The Be Good Tanyas), up and coming singer-song writer Mike Clark and popular hip-hop artist Moka Only (of Swollen Members) have in common? They're all featured performers at PLANT-A-PALOOZA, a free outdoor concert taking place June 19 in celebration of a unique community environmental effort the Mahon Park Stewardship Project.
Over the past year, 160 determined volunteers have helped to rid the park of 65 cubic metres of invasive plant species, replacing them with more than 3000 native plants. City contractors have cleared paths, reinforced streambeds, built trails and erected fences to protect newly rehabilitated areas. The Stewardship Project has involved all sectors of the community, from local businesses and clubs to North Shore schools that made environmental stewardship part of their curriculum (and have benefited from being able to use the park as an outdoor classroom).

PLANTAPALOOZA is intended as a big thank-you to all these hard-working stewards, and a chance for the public to enjoy the newly revitalized park, which will be officially opened by the Mayor and City Council of North Vancouver at the beginning of the concert. Aside from the musical performances, there will be lots of hands-on fun for kids, educational displays, and a native plant sale. Rumour has it that Edward Mahon himself, the Englishman who first bought the land that is now the park back in the 1890s, may even make an appearance.
More than anything, however, PLANT-A-PALOOZA is a celebration of community; of the power that we all have to make a difference, just by getting out and getting involved in our own urban parks.

Mahon Park is a rare urban forest spread over 26 hectares of North Shore land. It's an ecological island in the heart of busy North Vancouver - an oasis of greenery that supports habitats for salmon, trout, salamander, owl and hawk among other species. However, the Park has been degraded due to intense human impact; most natural areas in the park have been disturbed beyond the threshold level of natural recovery. The goal of the Mahon Park Stewardship Project is to make the Park a lush, healthy forest again. This pioneering initiative, led by national environmental NGO Evergreen and the City of North Vancouver, aims to show the world what can be done when communities get involved in the care of urban green spaces from the ground up - literally!

    WORKSHOP

    Saturday, February 21, 2004
    10:00 am to 2:30 pm
    Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Centre
    Stanley Park, Vancouver BC

You are invited to participate in drafting a Recovery Action Plan for Sea Otters in BC. All those interested in the recovery of sea otters are welcome to attend.
BC's sea otters are designated as 'THREATENED' by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) and legally listed under the Species at Risk Act (SARA).
    The session has three purposes:
    1) Provide information about sea otter recovery planning in BC, particularly on the development of a Recovery Action Plan for Sea Otters in BC. This Action Plan details specific activities being recommended to implement the Recovery Strategy for Sea Otters in BC that was completed in June 2003.
Information is also included on the costs of the action plan and the benefits to be derived from its implementation. An updated draft of the Recovery Strategy, which has been revised based on input already received from First Nations, stakeholders and other interested parties, will be available.
    2) Provide an opportunity for feedback on the draft Action Plan.
    3) Seek community input to stimulate local involvement in sea otter recovery activities.

Should you be unable to attend, the draft of the Action Plan will also be available (January 20, 2004) for your comment through the Fisheries & Oceans Canada website www-comm.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/pages/consultations/sea-otters/default_e.htm
