FISH MANAGEMENT ACTIVITIES IN WATERSHED

Escapement Summary Annual Stream Inspections following "enhancement" (DFO 1980-1985)
Spawner Survey Thain Creek (DFO 1998)
Thain Creek (MCSS 1995-2006)
Mosquito Creek (MCSS 1995-2000)
Fish Sample species n/a (NVSD/PIP 1986)
Wagg Creek, Lower Mission Creek (CNV 1995) - Coho, 'Rainbow' (Steelhead)
East Back Channel (CNV 1996-2002) - Coho, Steelhead, Cutthroat
West Back Channel (CNV 1997-2002) - Coho, Steelhead, Cutthroat
Mosquito Creek (MCSS 1998) - Steelhead, Sculpin, Crayfish
Griffin Channel (DFO 2000) (DFO 2003) - Coho, Cutthroat
Fell Channel (DFO 2003) - Coho, Cutthroat
Thain Creek - Upper (DFO 2001) - Cutthroat
Transplant Fry transplant has been limited to small numbers of Coho (1986 to 2002) and Chum (after 2002) produced by schools through the Salmon in the Classroom Program, and released into the main stem of Mosquito Creek.
Natural spawning beds in Thain Creek, and the Griffin and Fell restoration channels, have been left to naturalize - allowing "wild" fish to repopulate with less competition from other genetic stocks.
After 2002, Coho fry will no longer be transplanted.
Instead, the school programs will hatch Chum eggs, then feed and release the fry. Since Chum migrate to the ocean at release, they do not compete for food and shelter with wild Coho and Steelhead fry which live in the stream for some time before migrating.

Cutthroat - 1000 fry (MELP 1986)
Coho (SEP pre-1987)
Coho - School Program - Mosquito Creek (DFO SEP 1986-2002)
Coho - 1000 fry - Thain Creek Open Channel (CNV May 2000)
Note: Unauthorized release. This release was not endorsed by the local DFO-CA or by MCSS. There was no prior consultation to determine possible impact. The timing and location (releasing unfed fish near a steelhead redd at the time young fry were emerging) was unfortunate.
Coho - under 200 fry - School Program - Upper Thain Creek (DFO SEP March 2001)
Chum - School Program - Mosquito Creek (DFO SEP 2003)

FISH PRODUCTION POTENTIAL

Habitat Enhancement Side channel. Instream cover.
Revegetate stream banks.
Habitat Protection Restrict access to stream by fencing, revegetation.
Re-Establish Access Culverts at Windsor, Evergreen - Thain Creek

FISH PRODUCTION CONSTRAINTS

Channelized Banks Flashy flows.
Limited instream cover
Lack of Instream Gravel High velocity flows carry gravel d/s.
(ref-DFO-1998)
Water Quantity High impermeable affects water levels.
Low flows limit fish access.
Water Quality Affected by non-point source pollution from development. (ref-DFO-1998)
Barrier/Location Culvert 850m/Queens Road (Mosquito Creek)
Culvert/Windsor Road (Thain Creek)
Culvert/Jones (Wagg Creek)
Culvert/Larson (Lower Mission)
