ENVIRONMENT ACTIVITIES

QUEEN MARY COMMUNITY SCHOOL

(Wagg Creek)
COMMUNITY GARDEN
The Queen Mary Community Garden was reorganized in 2009, with assistance from the City of North Vancouver. It now includes 4 plots for school students, 10 for parents of students, and 62 for community residents. The first planting season was 2010.
Student plots are managed in cooperation with the Edible Garden Society, which helps out during summer when the school is closed.
Honey bees are raised on one plot, providing a better understanding of the importance of bees as pollinators for food crops.
RECYCLING
The school recycles. Grade 7 students collect and recycle juice containers.
ENVIRONMENT AWARENESS
Guest speakers are regular visitors. On Earth Day 2010, students from Carson Graham Secondary School did a presentaion on recycling.
STREAM STUDIES
The school participates in the "Salmonids in the Classroom" program, raising chum fry from eggs.
SPUDS AND TUBS
Students start potatoes in tubs, then take them to the nearby Seniors Centre, where the plants are maintained. At harvest time, the students return to share the work and the experience.
