STORM WATER

Municipalities build and maintain storm sewer systems to drain runoff from streets.
Almost all storm drains in the Mosquito Creek watershed discharge directly into the streams. A few discharge into Burrard Inlet, a few into the sanitary sewer system.
There are associated problems. Contaminants also flow into the storm drains and streams. Rain water is diverted from ground water reserves. Rapid runoff causes flashy high water levels in the streams, which increases erosion and flushes out fish.
